How to Make a Cartoon Family Christmas Card from a Photo with AI

Upload a clear family photo (pets welcome), choose a cute illustration style, and generate a cartoon version of everyone. Or describe the scene in words, like "a family of four in matching red sweaters decorating a tree." Download the image, place it in a card app or document editor, type your greeting and names as real text, and print a test copy before ordering more.

This is a guide to the illustration, not a card-layout tool. You make the cartoon here, then place it in any card app or document editor.

What you need

  • One clear photo, or a few photos if you would rather generate each person or pet on their own.
  • A card app or document editor, plus the greeting and names you want on the card.

You can turn a photo into a cute illustration or skip the photo and describe the scene in words. Each generation returns one image. If someone looks off, change a small detail and generate again.

Step 1: Pick a photo that converts well

A photo tends to come out more consistent when faces are visible and well lit, filters are light, and people are not stacked on top of each other. Pets tend to come out more consistent when they face the camera. Those are practical conditions, not a success rate.

If someone else's kids or relatives are in the photo, get their OK first, or a parent's OK for a child.

Step 2: Generate the cartoon (photo or text)

From your family photo

  1. Upload the photo.
  2. Choose a style. A cute flat Japanese clip-art look reads clearly on a card. Watercolor is softer, paper-cut is more graphic, and chibi is more playful.
  3. Generate. You get one image. If a face, hand, or pet looks off, adjust the description and generate again.

From a description

Families who would rather not upload a photo can describe hair, clothes, pets, and the setting. Say "no text" and leave empty space for the greeting. Copy-ready lines are in the next section.

Sticker mode for cut-outs

Sticker mode asks the model for a clean or transparent background and returns one image. Alpha transparency is not guaranteed. After you download, check whether the background came out transparent; if not, use your phone's or editor's remove-background tool. Make each person or pet separately, then arrange the cut-outs on any card template. The steps for that mode are on make cut-out stickers.

Copy-ready Christmas prompts

Paste one prompt, generate, and keep the line that says "no text." These are prompts only. Example images for this article are not embedded yet.

  • A family of four in matching red knit sweaters decorating a Christmas tree, simple lines, soft colors, minimal shading, cute flat illustration, plain background, no text
  • Two parents and a toddler building a snowman, a shiba dog in a scarf beside them, cute flat style, space at the top for a greeting
  • A grandmother and grandchild baking gingerbread cookies, warm kitchen, cute flat illustration
  • A cat in a tiny Santa hat sleeping in a gift box, sticker style, clean background
  • A couple holding mugs of cocoa by a window with falling snow, simple cute illustration, no text
  • A family waving from a small car with a tree tied on the roof, cute flat style
  • A family of three and a cat hanging stockings on a mantel, cute flat illustration, space at the bottom for names, no text
  • A small dog in a scarf sitting beside wrapped gifts, sticker style, clean background, no text

Do not name characters, films, or studios in the prompt. For the sticker-style lines, check whether the background came out transparent; if not, use a remove-background tool before you place the cut-out on the card.

Step 3: Add your greeting and names (as real text)

AI-drawn lettering is often misspelled. Type "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays," and the names, as real text in the card app. A layout that stays easy to print puts the illustration on the top or in the center, the text below it, and a margin around the edge for trimming.

Step 4: Print or send

Common finished-card sizes are 5Γ—7 in and 4Γ—6 in. Those are card sizes, not a claim about the file this tool returns. For a full-bleed 5Γ—7 print the image may not be large enough, so place the illustration as part of the card (top half or center) rather than edge to edge.

Print one proof first. Zoom in on faces and hands before you order more. For a digital card, share the image itself or post it in a holiday message.

If you only need the file for a week or two in December, Flex Weekly is billed weekly.

Watermark, printing, and commercial use

Free downloads are watermarked and for personal, non-commercial use only. Watermark-free images from Flex Weekly ($2.99/week) or Pro ($9.9/month) may be used commercially. Because a card gets printed, a free download will show the watermark on the paper. Current prices are on pricing.

FAQ

Can AI turn my family photo into a Christmas cartoon?

Yes. Upload a clear, well-lit photo, pick an illustration style, and generate. If someone doesn't look right, adjust the description and generate again.

Is it free?

No sign-up, free to try. Free downloads are watermarked and limited to personal, non-commercial use.

Can I print the cartoon on my Christmas cards?

For personal cards, yes. Free downloads include a watermark, so for clean prints use a watermark-free image from Flex Weekly ($2.99/week) or Pro ($9.9/month).

Can I use it for my business's holiday cards?

That's commercial use, so use a watermark-free image generated on Flex Weekly or Pro.

Can I include our dog or cat?

Yes. Pets work best when they face the camera in good light. You can also generate the pet separately in sticker mode and place it next to the family. Check whether the background came out transparent; if not, use a remove-background tool.

Should I let the AI write "Merry Christmas"?

Better not. AI lettering is often misspelled. Add your greeting and names as text in your card app.

Is this official Irasutoya art?

No. These are new AI-generated images in a cute flat Japanese style. The service is not affiliated with Irasutoya or Takashi Mifune.
